Q&A with Mr Diskin
Tell us about your role at Wycombe Abbey School Hong Kong.
I am a Year 6 Class Teacher and teach History and Geography to Year 7 and 8.
What inspired you to become a teacher?
My parents are teachers, so I grew up around teaching and worked in kindergartens and schools as a teenager. I really enjoy working with children, as every day is different and rewarding.
How would you describe your teaching style?
I am calm and easy-going, and my goal is to make lessons as enjoyable as possible while ensuring pupils complete the work required. I like to vary my lessons so pupils are not always sitting at their tables. I believe that if children enjoy coming to school each day, learning becomes easier and more enjoyable too.
What’s one thing you hope students take away from your teaching?
I hope my pupils understand that there is much more to life than simply getting good grades. To me, the attitude and effort someone puts in are far more important than the end result.
What do you love about Wycombe Abbey School Hong Kong?
From my first week, I have had a really positive impression of everyone here. There is a culture that people enjoy being part of and that makes staff want to continue working at the school.
Are you involved in any extracurricular activities, school events, or initiatives?
Not currently, but I would love to get involved in basketball if the opportunity arises. I also love snowboarding, so I would be keen to help with the school ski trip.
What book, movie, or song would you recommend to your students—and why?
I would recommend the movie Inside Out to both parents and pupils. It is one of my favourite films and offers an interesting insight into what might be happening inside the minds of both children and parents.
What are your hobbies or interests outside of school? What is a fun fact about yourself?
I play basketball regularly and am part of a team. I also love snowboarding and try to go at least once a year. For the past three years, I have travelled to Japan to snowboard.
What are you looking forward to most this year?
I am looking forward to meeting my pupils, settling into the routine at Wycombe Abbey School Hong Kong, and getting to know all the staff across the school.
Through his calm and engaging approach to teaching, Mr Diskin aims to create an enjoyable learning environment where pupils value effort and attitude alongside academic achievement. As he begins his journey at Wycombe Abbey School Hong Kong, we look forward to seeing the positive impact he will have on his pupils and the wider school community.
