Q&A with Ms. Jane Cheng

Tell us about your role at Wycombe Abbey School Hong Kong.
I am the Head of Mathematics at Senior School.

What inspired you to become a teacher?
As an educator, it’s a meaningful time to empower learners to explore the unknown and drive positive change, no matter how small it may be.

How would you describe your teaching style?
My teaching style varies depending on the students’ age group. For KS3, I incorporate more group activities. As students move into KS4 and KS5, the focus shifts to developing their independent learning, inquiry, and reasoning skills. I like to use online tools to help students learn at their own pace, allowing me to monitor their progress and provide responsive feedback to tailor their instruction. Regardless of the age group, I aim to promote higher-order thinking skills.

What’s one thing you hope students take away from your teaching?
Embrace the unknown, break it down and give it a try!

What do you love about Wycombe Abbey School Hong Kong?
I really enjoy the atmosphere at Wycombe Abbey School Hong Kong. It’s a small, supportive community where everyone knows each other, which fosters a great sense of collaboration and connection.

Are you involved in any extracurricular activities, school events, or initiatives?
I am currently furthering my skills through an advanced mathematics course. Building on this foundation, my future initiative is to offer Desmos Artwork program. This will empower students to apply mathematical functions in a creative context, designing their own logos and animations.

What book, movie, or song would you recommend to your students—and why?
The song “Happy” by Pharrell Williams. This song always puts me in a good mood. Whenever I listen to it and follow the rhythm, it helps me stay happy and positive.

What are your hobbies or interests outside of school? What is a fun fact about yourself?
I like hiking and standup paddleboarding. I find peace in exploring nature. Hiking allows me to connect with the forest, from the quiet presence of the trees to occasional encounters with wild animals. These moments give me a profound appreciation for all living creatures. For a different kind of joy, I turn to paddleboarding, which offers a fun challenge of balancing on the open water.

What are you looking forward to most this year?
Explore Hong Kong by all its mountains and learning Cantonese.

We are excited to see the impact Ms. Cheng will have on our Senior School community. Her innovative approach and dedication to fostering curiosity promise to make mathematics a truly engaging and transformative experience for our students.
