Q&A with Ms. Eileen Tan
Tell us about your role at Wycombe Abbey School Hong Kong.
I serve as the Science and Mathematics teacher at Wycombe Abbey School Hong Kong, where I teach Science to students in Years 6 to 8 and Mathematics to Year 8.
What inspired you to become a teacher?
While pursuing my university studies, I took on a short-term role as a relief teacher at a primary school in Singapore during a vacation. That experience sparked a deep appreciation for the dynamic and engaging environment of a school. I found great joy in working with young learners and was encouraged by the school leadership to pursue formal teacher training at the National Institute of Education in Singapore.
How would you describe your teaching style?
I enjoy working with upper primary and preparatory students, as they are at a formative stage of self-discovery. My teaching approach focuses on nurturing their curiosity and guiding them to recognise and develop their individual strengths and potential.
What’s one thing you hope students take away from your teaching?
I hope my students develop independence and resilience — qualities that extend far beyond academic success and will empower them to shape meaningful and fulfilling futures.
What do you love about Wycombe Abbey School Hong Kong?
I deeply appreciate the close-knit community at Wycombe Abbey School Hong Kong. The school provides a nurturing environment where students are given the time and space to grow and flourish both academically and personally.
Are you involved in any extracurricular activities, school events, or initiatives?
Yes, I currently lead an extracurricular activity for EAL students called the Science Language Booster, designed for Years 6 to 8. As a bilingual educator, I aim to help students build confidence in expressing scientific concepts in English.
What book, movie, or song would you recommend to your students—and why?
As a Science teacher, I encourage students to explore age-appropriate science documentaries with their families. These programmes can ignite curiosity and inspire awe at the wonders of the natural world.
What are your hobbies or interests outside of school? What is a fun fact about yourself?
I enjoy running, which not only supports physical well-being but also helps me clear my mind and recharge.
What are you looking forward to most this year?
I am excited to immerse myself in the vibrant culture of Wycombe Abbey and to inspire my students to develop a genuine love for Science.
Ms. Tan’s approach reminds us that education is not only about gaining knowledge, but about understanding oneself as a learner. Through her guidance, pupils are encouraged to explore their strengths, develop independence, and embrace challenges with curiosity and confidence. Her work continues to strengthen the culture of care, growth, and discovery that defines the WASHK community.
