Q&A with Mr. Leo Lu

Tell us about your role at Wycombe Abbey School Hong Kong.
I’m a Chinese Teacher at Wycombe Abbey School Hong Kong. My role involves teaching Chinese to students across different year groups and various language backgrounds, helping them develop both linguistic proficiency and cultural understanding. I also collaborate with colleagues to create engaging lesson plans and contribute to the broader academic and pastoral life of the school.

What inspired you to become a teacher?
I’ve always been passionate about language and communication. Teaching allows me to share that passion while making a meaningful impact on young minds. Seeing students grow in confidence and curiosity is incredibly rewarding and keeps me motivated every day.

How would you describe your teaching style?
My teaching style is interactive, student-centered, and culturally immersive. I aim to create a classroom environment where students feel safe to express themselves, ask questions, and explore the language through real-life contexts, stories, and creative activities.

What’s one thing you hope students take away from your teaching?
I hope my students leave with a genuine appreciation for the Chinese language and culture, and the confidence to use their language skills in meaningful ways — whether in conversation, travel, or future studies.

What do you love about Wycombe Abbey School Hong Kong?
The school’s commitment to academic excellence and holistic development is truly inspiring. I love the supportive community, the emphasis on character education, and the way we nurture students to become well-rounded individuals.

Are you involved in any extracurricular activities, school events, or initiatives?
Yes! This year I will participate in cultural events like Chinese New Year celebrations, Chinese Support ECA, and external Chinese poems competitions. These activities allow students to experience the richness of Chinese beyond the classroom.

What book, movie, or song would you recommend to your students—and why?
I’d recommend the movie The Road Home (《我的父亲母亲》) by Zhang Yimou. It’s a beautiful story that highlights traditional values, love, and the importance of heritage. It’s also a great way for students to hear authentic Mandarin in a meaningful context.

What are your hobbies or interests outside of school? What is a fun fact about yourself?
Outside of school, I enjoy reading, movies, and exploring different cuisines. A fun fact about me is that I used to play lion dance in Chinese New Year celebrations when I was young!

What are you looking forward to most this year?
This year, I’m looking forward to launching new classroom activities that blend storytelling, drama, and digital media to make Chinese learning even more meaningful and fun.

Mr. Lu’s approach reminds us of the power of language as a bridge — connecting pupils to culture, creativity, and meaningful self-expression. Through his immersive, pupil-centred lessons, he encourages young learners to build confidence, embrace curiosity, and develop an authentic appreciation for Chinese language and heritage. His contributions further strengthen the vibrant, culturally rich environment that defines the WASHK Prep School.
