Jasmine Fong, a 2022 graduate of Wycombe Abbey School Hong Kong, now thrives at Cheltenham Ladies’ College in the UK. In this reflection, she shares how her time at WASHK instilled in her resilience, self-belief, and a passion for learning—qualities that continue to guide her journey. From improving her confidence to discovering her love for acting and medicine, Jasmine’s story is one of personal growth and the enduring impact of a supportive school community.
A Foundation of Kindness and Growth
“My experience was amazing at Wycombe Abbey Hong Kong. Everyone is so nice and supportive, and everyone is so friendly and will always stick up for you. One thing I love about this school, is that the pastoral support here is amazing. Thank you to the teachers, for helping me on my journey to get to where I am today, in Cheltenham Ladies’ college.”
Lessons in Resilience, Self-Discovery and Confidence
“Wycombe abbey had a very strong influence on me, getting homework daily motivated me to revise and constantly learn new things. I’ve learnt that no one is perfect and it’s okay to make mistakes sometimes. Sometimes we get better grades, sometimes worse but the important thing is how much effort you put into something and never give up.
Wycombe abbey helped with my personal development a lot. I used to be very quiet, shy and timid when I first joined in Year 4, but because all the students were super kind and welcoming, I settled in and made so many friends that I could never imagine not having. Friends that look out for me, stand up for me and embraced who I really was.
I did many extra-curricular activities at Wycombe Abbey HK, for example, acting was something I did. Even now, I still do acting. I love it so much and could never imagine quitting, it has helped me boost my self-confidence and helped with public speaking fears. As well as this, acting makes me physically active. As I’m not particularly keen about sports, so acting is a great alternative.”
Advice for Future Graduates
“Advice I would give to other students is if you start a new boarding school in the UK, make good friends and choose your friends wisely. True friends don’t make your problems ever disappear, but they are the ones who won’t disappear during your problems. True friends with always accept who you are.
As well as this, I think being hardworking is very important. Some people think certain people naturally know everything but that’s not true. There are no secrets to success, it’s the result of preparation, hard work and learning to make mistakes which is a good thing.
It’s important not to compare yourself to others too. There’s no comparison between the sun and the moon. They shine when it’s the right time.
The last advice I would like to give to everyone is the most important which is to be kind. You never know what someone is going through until you walk into their shoes.”
Dreaming Big: A Future in Medicine
“When I grow up, I want to become a doctor. I’m not sure which kind- the list is endless. I want to become a doctor because I want to help people in need when they need it the most. I also like science, so I think a medical degree is a great way to explore my passions and aspirations. You can also make a real difference to someone’s life by helping them because whatever you put out into the world, always has a way of coming back to you. I also want to work in an environment with some challenges, so I cans stretch myself and learn life skills and problem-solving skills. I plan to make my future goals come true by working hard as I’m always up for a challenge.”
