Q&A with Mr. Strange
Tell us about your role at Wycombe Abbey School Hong Kong.
As a Physical Education teacher, I deliver engaging lessons across Key Stages 2, 3, and 4, utilising a variety of sports categories, including invasion games, net games, striking and fielding games, and target games. I also implement flexible grouping strategies to enhance participation and learning.
What inspired you to become a teacher?
I spent my junior and senior years as an athlete, being educated by a spectrum of coaches and teachers. Despite experiencing contrasting philosophies, my mentors have always been a huge inspiration to me. As I grew older, my intrinsic motivation to search, discover, and explore within critical workspaces stimulated a desire to solve problems, allowing my singular passion for basketball to evolve into a fondness for education.

How would you describe your teaching style?
My approach emphasises student choice and fosters an inclusive environment that celebrates diversity and equity, where individual and team flourishing is paramount. I adapt my teaching strategies to meet the varying needs of all students, including those with neurodiverse backgrounds, ensuring that everyone feels valued and supported.
In these roles, I implement inquiry-based learning strategies and differentiated instruction to cater to diverse learning styles. This encourages individualised movement solutions and ensures that all students are critically engaged and supported in their efforts to search for answers, discover new approaches, and explore contextualised possibilities when solving problems.
What’s one thing you hope students take away from your teaching?
The confidence and creativity to adapt across physical activity environments for lifelong engagement in movement and health.
What do you love about Wycombe Abbey School Hong Kong?
The people. The students, dedicated faculty members, and strong sense of belonging and mutual respect create a nurturing atmosphere that inspires everyone to thrive.

Are you involved in any extracurricular activities, school events, or initiatives?
Yes. I am coordinating the WASHK Core Sports programmes at both the Prep School and Senior School. We are also planning inter-school sports competitions in sports such as tennis, hockey, and netball for our junior athletes.
What book, movie, or song would you recommend to your students—and why?
I would recommend The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. This book beautifully illustrates the importance of following one’s dreams and listening to one’s heart. It encourages readers to embrace their personal journeys and recognise that the pursuit of their passions is just as valuable as achieving their goals. The themes of self-discovery and perseverance resonate deeply, making it an inspiring read for students as they navigate their own paths in life.

What are your hobbies or interests outside of school? What is a fun fact about yourself?
In addition to my professional qualifications, my peers know me as an enthusiastic athlete who actively participates in a broad range of sports. I am a competitive coastal and fine rowing athlete representing the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, and a former semi-professional basketball player with the Hong Kong Basketball Association.
As a significant milestone, I was invited as a Visiting Artist with the School of Dance at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts. More recently, I have earned certifications in Advanced Open Water and Rescue Scuba Diving, demonstrating my ability to handle complex underwater situations safely and effectively. I have also gained certification in the Bronze Medallion for aquatic rescue, highlighting my skills in water safety techniques, as well as certification in sport climbing, showcasing my proficiency in climbing methods and safety protocols.

What are you looking forward to most this year?
The opportunity to support all students’ development and agency, fostering an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive, share their ideas, and pursue their passions in physical activity and sport, while promoting physical literacy for all.
Through his inclusive approach to Physical Education and his commitment to physical literacy, Mr. Strange plays an important role in supporting pupils’ development across both Prep and Senior School. We look forward to seeing the impact of his work in lessons, across our Core Sports programmes, and throughout the wider school community.
