At Wycombe Abbey Hong Kong, we are committed to nurturing the next generation of female leaders in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM). Recently, we had the honour of participating in a special event at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), dedicated to encouraging young women to explore careers in STEAM fields.
Statistics show that women are significantly underrepresented in STEAM professions, and initiatives like this aim to inspire and recruit more girls into these vital sectors. Our school has taken proactive steps to adapt our curriculum, ensuring it resonates with our female students and sparks their interest in STEAM disciplines.
During the event, our students engaged in an innovative project where they assembled a dynamic tricycle designed to promote accessibility. Without prior knowledge, the girls were tasked with following intricate schematics to construct the tricycle from small parts, working under time pressure to complete the project within an hour and a half. This exercise mirrored the critical thinking and problem-solving skills we cultivate daily at Wycombe Abbey Hong Kong.
Each girl focused intently on the assembly, carefully determining the correct placement of screws and wiring the motor to ensure proper functionality. Remarkably, our pupils were the first to complete their assembly, demonstrating not only their technical abilities but also their resilience and teamwork. They then proceeded to test their tricycles, refining their designs in real-time—a true testament to their ingenuity and commitment.
While the event was not a competition, the natural spirit of friendly rivalry encouraged our students to excel. It was gratifying to witness their determination and collaborative spirit, as they supported one another throughout the process. The success of this initiative reaffirms our mission at Wycombe Abbey Hong Kong to empower young women in STEAM, preparing them for future careers in engineering and beyond.
We are immensely proud of our students’ achievements and look forward to continuing to inspire more girls to pursue their passions in STEAM.
